TEA SAMPLE SET

Satemwa, Malawi, Africa

Nestled in the rolling hills of Thyolo, Malawi, the Satemwa Tea Estate stands as a symbol of the country’s rich tea heritage and remarkable agricultural success. Founded in 1923, Satemwa has become one of Africa's premier tea producers, known for its high-quality leaves and innovative tea-making practices. This article explores the history, unique features, and sustainable practices of the Satemwa Tea Estate, as well as the significance of Malawian tea in the global market. The Satemwa Tea Estate was established by the Chilembwe family nearly a century ago. It began as a modest endeavor with the vision to cultivate high-quality tea in the favorable climate of the Thyolo region. The estate has grown over the years, marked by a commitment to excellence and a focus on sustainability. Today, Satemwa encompasses over 1000 hectares of tea and also diversifies its production with various other crops, including coffee, macadamia nuts, and a variety of herbs. Satemwa specializes in producing several notable tea varieties, each distinguished by its unique flavor profile and aroma.

Malawi's unique climate, characterized by warm temperatures and substantial rainfall, creates an ideal environment for tea cultivation. The high altitude of the Thyolo region also contributes to the slow growth of tea leaves, resulting in more complex flavors and aromas. However, like many agricultural sectors, tea production at Satemwa is increasingly facing challenges from climate change. The estate is proactive in implementing adaptive strategies to mitigate these effects while maintaining high-quality production standards. The Satemwa Tea Estate is not just a production site; it is also a destination for tea lovers around the world. Visitors can take guided tours through the tea gardens, learn about the tea-making process, and participate in tea tastings. The estate’s stunning landscapes, combined with its commitment to quality and sustainability, provide an enriching experience for both casual visitors and dedicated tea aficionados.

Grown at 1000-1200 meters above sea level, produced from various local unique cultivars from 50+ years old tea plantations. Most of these teas are fully handmade in limited quantities. All of them have their own unique character and original flavour.
