RED SNOW SHAN by AN SHIM TEA

ABOUT
RED SNOW SHAN is a Vietnamese red tea produced in Hà Giàng as part of our own production, where we control every stage from harvesting to final processing. The leaves are carefully picked from ancient tea trees and handled with precision, ensuring consistency and preserving the natural qualities of the material. This direct involvement allows us to maintain full quality control and achieve a highest-quality product.

A special focus is placed on material sourced from the Xà Phìn area, which we consider to offer the most balanced and expressive flavor profile. This origin is selected specifically for a limited early spring batch, when the leaves develop optimal aromatic clarity and harmony. The conditions of this area contribute to a refined balance between sweetness, depth, and freshness.

Production follows the traditional red tea method, including withering, rolling, controlled oxidation, and drying, with adjustments made to suit the structure of old tree leaves. Each stage is carefully controlled to highlight both the character of the raw material and the precision of processing. The result is a focused and limited expression that reflects both the terroir and our approach to quality and control.

TERROIR
Hà Giàng Province, located in the far north of Vietnam along the border with China, is one of the country's most important tea-producing regions and home to some of Southeast Asia's oldest tea trees. The region's high elevations, ranging from 1,000 to over 2,000 meters above sea level, combined with frequent mountain mists, abundant rainfall, rich soils, and significant day-to-night temperature fluctuations, create ideal conditions for producing teas of exceptional complexity, sweetness, minerality, and aging potential.

Hà Giàng is particularly famous for its Shan Tuyết tea trees, a unique Vietnamese tea variety often referred to as "Snow Mountain Tea." Many of these ancient trees grow naturally in remote mountain forests, where their deep root systems absorb nutrients and minerals from multiple geological layers. Harvested by local ethnic minority communities using traditional methods, Shan Tuyết teas are celebrated for their floral aromas, honey-like sweetness, rich texture, vibrant mountain character, and long-lasting aftertaste, making Hà Giàng one of the most respected tea terroirs in Vietnam.

One of the region's most renowned tea-sourcing villages is Xà Phìn, located at an altitude of approximately 1,300-1,600 meters above sea level. Surrounded by pristine forests and home to numerous ancient Shan Tuyết tea trees, the village has become known for preserving traditional tea cultivation passed down through generations. Teas from Xà Phìn are particularly valued for their refined floral aroma, pronounced sweetness, silky texture, vibrant minerality, and exceptional balance, making the village one of the finest expressions of Hà Giàng's remarkable tea heritage.

ORGANOLEPTICS
The dry leaf appearance is bold and natural, with large twisted leaves in dark brown tones and occasional silvery buds typical of ancient Shan Tuyết material. The aroma of the dry leaves is deep and expressive, showing notes of wild honey, dried fruit, and a subtle cocoa nuance. In a preheated teapot, the tea gradually opens, and the aroma becomes richer and more layered, revealing warm honeyed sweetness, ripe fruit, and a gentle woody depth. After a brief rinse, the leaves fully awaken, and the aroma gains clarity and balance, combining pronounced sweetness with soft mineral and slightly herbal undertones.

The aroma of the liquor in the empty cup is dense and persistent, with clear honeyed tones and a warm fruity trace. The taste is full and well-structured, with a smooth, slightly viscous texture and a balanced, rounded profile. From the first sips, a natural sweetness emerges, supported by layered fruit notes and a subtle cocoa nuance, with very low astringency. The profile remains stable and harmonious across multiple infusions, offering both depth and clarity. The aftertaste is long and clean, leaving a lingering sweetness with a soft cooling sensation. In the empty cup after drinking, rich notes of honey, dried fruit, and a delicate sweet trace remain.

"Produced just half an hour from the Chinese border, RED SNOW SHAN can be considered northern Vietnam's local interpretation of the famous Dian Hong style. It is crafted from the indigenous Shan Tuyết variety using processing methods adapted to the local climate and the unique character of the mountain tea trees. It is an excellent example of how the Snow Shan tradition expresses itself across the tea-growing regions of northern Vietnam.

Thanks to our own production facility, we are able to oversee every stage of the manufacturing process, from harvesting to the final drying of the leaves. This level of involvement allows us to maintain the quality and consistency that we believe this tea deserves. For almost ten years, RED SNOW SHAN has remained one of our best-selling teas, appreciated for its rich flavour, remarkable balance, and excellent aging potential. Throughout the years, we have experimented with different picking standards, including one bud, one bud with one leaf, and one bud with two leaves. In our experience, the traditional one bud with two leaves standard consistently produces the most complete and expressive cup, and it remains our preferred choice today."
