ABOUT
BVUMBWE WHITE PEONY is a white tea produced in Thyolo District at the renowned Satemwa Tea Estate. It is crafted in the Bai Mudan style from a combination of buds and young leaves, offering a balanced and expressive interpretation of white tea outside its traditional Chinese origin. The tea reflects both careful adaptation of classical methods and the distinct character of African terroir.

The material is sourced from organic tea plantations with bushes over 50 years old. These mature plants develop deeper root systems and more stable growth patterns, contributing to the density and integrity of the leaf. The organic cultivation approach supports a clean and natural expression of the tea, without the influence of synthetic inputs.

The production follows the classical white tea method, involving minimal processing without rolling or shaping. After harvesting, the leaves undergo controlled withering and slow drying, preserving their internal structure while allowing gentle natural transformation. The result is a tea valued for its clarity, smooth texture, and a balanced aromatic profile shaped by both origin and craftsmanship.

TERROIR
BVUMBWE WHITE PEONY is cultivated in the Thyolo District of Malawi, at the historic Satemwa Tea Estate. The region lies at elevations typically between 900 and 1,200 meters, with a warm tropical highland climate moderated by altitude. Regular rainfall, high humidity, and seasonal temperature variation create stable conditions for tea cultivation, supporting steady and balanced leaf development.

The terrain consists of gently sloping hills with well-drained, mineral-rich soils formed from ancient geological formations. These soils are high in organic matter and provide a balanced nutrient environment, allowing tea plants to develop without excessive stress. The plantation itself is organic, and the bushes, many over 50 years old, contribute to a more stable and concentrated raw material. Microclimate plays an important role, with morning mists, diffused sunlight, and consistent air circulation regulating plant metabolism. These conditions support a balanced composition of amino acids and polyphenols, resulting in both softness and gentle structure. Compared to more extreme mountain environments, the profile here develops with slightly more roundness and accessibility.

Another important aspect is the interaction between terroir and plant maturity. The combination of highland African conditions and older tea bushes creates a leaf material with both clarity and depth. This ensures that the final tea expresses not only the natural character of Thyolo but also the refinement associated with long-established tea gardens.

ORGANOLEPTICS
The dry leaf consists of a mix of buds and young leaves with a slightly open structure, showing tones from pale green to light brown with soft silvery tips. The aroma of the dry leaves is clean and inviting, with notes of dried flowers, light honey, and a gentle fruity nuance. In a preheated teapot, the leaves open gradually from the first infusion, releasing a refined aromatic profile where floral tones are supported by soft sweetness and a subtle fresh, slightly citrus-like brightness. As the infusion develops, the aroma becomes more integrated, combining gentle fruit notes with a calm, rounded depth.

The aroma of the liquor is clear and expressive, with a harmonious combination of floral notes, light sweetness, and delicate fruity undertones. The taste is smooth and balanced, with a light to medium body and a soft, slightly silky texture. A natural sweetness forms the core of the profile, supported by floral and lightly fruity tones and a mild, well-integrated astringency that adds structure. The profile remains clean and approachable, with a subtle brightness characteristic of the region. The aftertaste is clean and moderately persistent, with a returning sweetness and a soft, refreshing finish. In the empty cup after drinking, a delicate floral and slightly honeyed aroma remains, leaving a refined and elegant final impression.
