ORIGIN
SHAN TEA is a unique wild variety of Camellia Sinensis which grows high in mountains of the Northern part of Vietnam. SHAN TEA or SNOW SHAN (snow-upon-a-high-mountain) arises from the thick snow-white coat of fur that embraces each silky green tea bud. This telling feature enables the tea leaves to thrive at a height of 2000 meters above sea level, hampered by bitingly cold and frosty climate all year round. Ranging along North West Mountainous area: from Hà Giang, Yên Bái, Lào Cai to Lai Châu, Điện Biên, Sơn La ... Each of those lands is filled with Snow Shan Tea traces. Depending on the different soil condition, climate, harvesting habits, and crafty processing method in each province, Snow Shan Tea Taste would vary accordingly.
Vietnam is known as one of the oldest tea regions in the world, with a vast area of ancient tea trees spreading from northeast to northwest. Hà Giang province is located in the northeast part of Vietnam on the border with Yunnan province, China. This region is famous for its wild ancient trees grown here for hundreds and even thousands of years. The unique climate, high altitude, soil and high level of humidity create an excellent environment for the growth of tea trees, which gives this tea a particularly special character and taste.
This tea is our most valuable find in 2022 during our expedition to Vietnam. This tea is made from old trees, processed and aged by an experienced tea master who, was producing Pu'Er tea for Chinese and Hong Kong tea houses several decades ago. The tea is made using old technique, using large tea leaves material and processed for further storage. The tea is processed strongly enough to allow it to be stored in humid conditions, and carefully enough to ensure that the raw material remains intact and beautiful. Just look at this cake, it looks like Pu'Er from the antique period.
The most beautiful thing about this tea is the storage conditions in which it was spent over 20 years and has developed into a true old tea with its own unique character and taste! Hà Giàng Province is the northernmost province of Vietnam, with a humid subtropical climate. Here, depending on the altitude above sea level and the time of year, it can be very hot and very humid. It is very difficult to age tea under such conditions, but this tea has stood the test of time and turned into a masterpiece.
