ORIGIN
Lai Châu is a remote mountainous province in northwestern Vietnam, bordering China and known for its wild tea forests, pristine nature, and diverse ethnic cultures. Nestled within the Hoàng Liên Sơn mountain range at altitudes between 1,000 and 2,500 meters, the region is characterized by misty valleys, clean mountain air, and mineral-rich soils that create an ideal environment for growing exceptional tea. The cool, humid climate with strong temperature variation between day and night allows the tea leaves to develop slowly, concentrating their natural aroma and sweetness.
This area is home to ancient wild tea trees known as Shan Tuyết - literally “Snow Tea” - a reference to the silvery hairs that cover the young buds. These trees, some centuries old, grow deep in the forests at high elevations and belong to the Camellia sinensis var. assamica variety. Local ethnic communities such as the H’Mông, Dao, and Thai have been harvesting these leaves for generations, using traditional methods of hand-picking and sun-drying that preserve the tea’s natural integrity.
Teas from Lai Châu, particularly Gu Shu Mao Cha made from ancient trees, are recognized for their clarity, freshness, and powerful mountain energy. The liquor is typically bright golden, with notes of honey, wildflowers, and minerals, balanced by a gentle bitterness that transforms into a lingering sweet aftertaste. Grown in forests untouched by pollution or chemicals, these teas reflect the purity and vitality of their environment. Lai Châu stands as one of Vietnam’s most authentic tea regions — a place where ancient trees and traditional craftsmanship continue to define the living spirit of mountain tea culture.
