ABOUT
Red Forest is an experimental tea produced from ancient tea trees in Vietnam by a Taiwanese master who applies Taiwanese tea-making techniques together with his own personal processing methods. By adapting traditional Taiwanese craftsmanship to the character of old Vietnamese tea tree material, he created a tea with a profile that cannot be replicated elsewhere. The production focuses not on fitting within established tea categories, but on exploring new possibilities of aroma, texture, and structure.

The tea is crafted through a highly controlled and experimental process, where oxidation, leaf handling, and drying techniques are adjusted specifically for the ancient tree material. The master’s individual approach and experience play a key role in shaping the final expression, allowing the tea to develop unusual depth and layered aromatic complexity. This balance between traditional knowledge and innovation defines the character of Red Forest.

Red Forest became one of the major inspirations behind the creation of our special Out-Of-Type tea category, dedicated to unique teas with profiles that exist outside classical classifications. Within this category, we collect rare and unconventional productions that emphasize originality, craftsmanship, and authentic expression. This tea represents a philosophy of creative tea production rooted deeply in terroir, experimentation, and individuality.

TERROIR
Red Forest is sourced from the mountainous region of Hoàng Su Phì in Hà Giàng, Vietnam. This remote high-altitude area is characterized by cool mountain temperatures, dense mist, strong day and night temperature variation, and exceptionally clean natural surroundings. Tea trees in this region often grow at elevations exceeding 1200 meters, where slow leaf development contributes to concentrated aromatic and structural complexity.

The tea comes from ancient Shan Tuyết tea trees growing in semi-wild forest ecosystems with minimal agricultural intervention. The mineral-rich mountain soils and deep root systems of the old trees provide a stable and highly expressive raw material. These conditions allow the leaves to develop a unique balance of strength, sweetness, and layered aromatic depth.

The terroir of Hoàng Su Phì emphasizes purity, forest character, and natural complexity. Combined with experimental Taiwanese processing techniques, the environment creates a foundation for a tea with unusual texture and evolving aromatic expression, giving Red Forest its distinctive identity within the Out-Of-Type category.

ORGANOLEPTICS
The dry leaf appearance is dark and expressive, with long twisted leaves and occasional silvery accents from ancient tree material. The aroma of the dry leaves is deep and unusual, combining notes of forest honey, dried berries, warm wood, and subtle floral-fruity nuances. In a preheated teapot, the tea gradually opens, and the aroma becomes richer and more multidimensional, revealing resinous forest tones, baked fruit, soft caramel, and delicate orchid-like notes characteristic of Taiwanese-style processing. After a brief rinse, the leaves fully awaken, and the aroma gains remarkable depth and clarity, where sweetness, woodiness, and floral complexity integrate into a highly distinctive profile.

The aroma of the liquor in the empty cup is dense and persistent, with pronounced honeyed sweetness and warm forest-like undertones. The taste is smooth and layered, with a rounded medium-to-full body and an exceptionally refined texture. From the first sips, natural sweetness emerges together with notes of dried fruit, warm wood, dark honey, and subtle floral nuances, with almost no astringency. The profile evolves continuously across multiple infusions, revealing shifting aromatic layers uncommon in classical tea categories. The aftertaste is long, warming, and deeply atmospheric, leaving lingering forest honey sweetness with a gentle cooling sensation. In the empty cup after drinking, rich aromas of resin, flowers, dried berries, and warm caramel remain for a long time.
